This is the most underrated family trip in the country, largely because it is close enough that people do not treat it as a proper holiday. It also works as a long weekend, several times a year, which is exactly what a points allocation is good at. Short, repeated, close-to-home trips are where ownership quietly earns its keep.
2. The KwaZulu-Natal North Coast
Getting there: about an hour's flight to Durban, then thirty to forty minutes north by road. Or a long day's drive.
Best months: April to September for warm, dry, comfortable days. December is glorious and completely full.

Warm ocean, established resorts, and a coastline built around exactly the kind of multi-bedroom self-catering unit that families need. The catch is that the peak weeks are eye-watering and they sell out a year ahead.
That combination, high peak retail plus predictable annual demand, is the textbook case for ownership. If your family is going to the KZN coast every December for the next fifteen years regardless, you are choosing between paying tomorrow's rate fifteen times or fixing a large part of it now.
3. Cape Town and the Garden Route
Getting there: about two hours from OR Tambo.
Best months: November to March for summer and beaches. February and March are the sweet spot: full summer, thinner crowds, better prices than December.
Fits: ownership.
The Cape is the one domestic destination that competes with anywhere in the world on scenery, and the Garden Route turns it into a proper multi-stop trip. For families it works because there is genuinely something for every age: beaches, mountains, penguins, wine estates for the adults, and a road trip that is short enough not to become a war.
Book flights early for the December and January window. Those seats are among the most contested domestic seats in the country.
Once you are past about six hours in the air, the daily cost on the ground matters more than the airfare. That is why Southeast Asia keeps beating Europe on a family budget.
4. Mauritius
Getting there: roughly four hours direct from Johannesburg.
Best months: May to November, the drier and cooler window.

7. Bali
